Show and Tell

Partly due to the book illustration activities and partly due to our involvement with the Houston Museum of Fine Arts we got into a very busy program of sharing our creativity with others.

Loela does most of the talking (its like that at the Art Barn too :-)

The talks and demonstrations we offer are listed below. If you would like to feature us at your function, please email us to check availability and fees and also tell us which topic you are interested in (Listing Below).

Motivational and Creativity Talks

We run different formats of engagements:

A.      Lecture and Demonstration – we talk about the subject and demonstrate how to do it

B.      Class and Workshop – Demonstration with participation of attendees - they take part in the creative process and each attendee creates her/his own piece during the workshop

Both types are conducted either as a single event (obviously on one topic) or as a series of events. Series of events can either be on a weekly basis for 4-8 weeks or spread through the year at appropriate times.

We generally, but only when appropriate, ask that some time is also allowed for displaying and selling our art and for book autographing.

Motivational and Inspirational Talks

1.       Stumbling blocks or building blocks.

Loela’s inspirational and motivational talks are just that – they inspire and they motivate you to LIVE LIFE, to view the world through a different eye, never take anything for granted and to be thankful in all circumstances and for every opportunity even if it looks like a roadblock. She had her childhood in South Africa. Her miraculous recovery from a life threatening accident when breaking her neck at the age of 9, having to leave her family and adapt to a new culture at 18, starting her own business at 25, being the caretaker of her terminally ill husband and then widowed at 29, and then being a step mother of teenagers at 33 all culminated a life experience that most won’t find in a lifetime. Despite all these hardships, Loela developed an inspiring and thankful attitude towards God and Life. Hearing her talk about her journey and blessings despite the hardship is moving. Loela’s creativity and sunshine energy are contagious!

 2.       Family gone Creative. Boredom on Couches or Family Fun around Workbenches.

Our neighbors used to refer to us as “One Crazy and the other Nuts”. Where we live now we are called “the Eccentrics down there in the woods”. What is wrong with being creative?

In this talk the JoLoè Family will share some of our experiences along our journey of creativity. For us, it came naturally as a God given talent and in our kids it is developing rapidly. Many people crave to be creative but do not know where to start, how to change lifestyle or attitude or they just give up far too easily. For others – they do not even know what they are missing. Parents yell “too much TV is not good for you!”, yet what do they do? Or, “I wish I could get the kid away from video games – it is all he does!”. People complain they are bored – we do not know what exactly that is. Why do we enjoy other’s creativity so much while only wishing we could be too.

By sharing our insights and experiences we hope to open some eyes to how easy it is to become creative, what rich rewards it holds how much fun it is to create something with your own hands – especially if family and friends become involved too. More so, that being creative is within anybody’s reach – the most difficult part is to believe you can be.

Floral Design Topics

The floral design style we use is our own JoLoè Style that was developed through combination of strong elements from European, Contemporary, Traditional, Minimalistic and Ikebana styles with Organic and Living Art feel. A strong theme of the work is “Less is More”. One does not need to spend a lot to create something stunning.

1.       Special-Theme Series (Floral Design) – this is a series of classes (or alternatively lectures and demonstrations) in which Loela covers floral designs for special occasions. Occasions to choose from are New Year, Valentines, Easter, Mother’s day, Father’s day, 4th July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Romantic event, Anniversary, Baby shower etc.

2.       Special-Themes Series (Floral design with Table Setting). This is the same as 1 above but extended to include how to set the table, folding napkins, doing menus, seating arrangements, lighting, invitations etc.

3.       Waste to WOW – in this talk Loela shows you how you can use items normally discarded as useless combined with plants from your garden to create floral arrangements that would WOW your guests.

4.       Uniquely You – Fun with Flowers. Floral designs from your own garden. The key in these lectures and demonstrations are to show you how you can develop a special touch of your own with floral designs which specifically include your own grown plants. Learn what to plant to get useful material for the arrangements. The ultimate in floral design is when you have grown the flowers too! Loela also offers this as an impromptu design demonstration at your tea-party or special event where she arrives "only with her toolbox" and show how one can arrange with whatever is available at your home .

5.       Fashionable Floral Design – In this series of classes (or alternatively lectures and demonstrations) Loela covers various styles of floral design suitable for Weddings, Banquets and various special occasions. She has developed a very unique style (which we refer to as the JoLoè style) which has wowed guests every time. In these lectures she shares her special touches that makes her work so unique.

6.       Scripture Inspired Floral Designs – Something very special to Loela is using floral designs to represent scripture verses. This is presented as a single class that fits well with a creative Bible study.
